Good construction but a disappoint

I purchased those 12x56 roof prism binoculars due to good reviews of general Nikon binoculars. I have great expectations because of its high price.
Construction is sturdy, feels nice and secure due to its rubber external coating and good weight for handheld usage. Focus wheel and diopter have smooth movement and are slop free. Same counts for IPD movement. Once in focus, it will stay dead on. Tested with the night sky focused stars are pinpoint. Collimation is perfect so my eyes never feel tired. Eyecups are big have nice feeling and have three notched positions other than folded. Coating could be seen on objective and eyepiece lens (advertised as fully multicoated optics).
But then comes the dissapoint. Optically seems to be a good binocular, images are crisp, bright and clear but chromatic aberrations are very strong. Purple fringings are seen even in a slight contrast objects. When contrast increases CA becomes very annoying. CA are only contained in some way when looking through the center of the objectives. I expected much more in this field from Nikon. Some flare is present with very bright objects as Jupiter.
In conclusion excellent construction, good optics but very strong chromatic aberrations aparent in daylight and during stargazing. Some flare with bright objects. If somehow CA had been contained it would be an excellent five star binocular. All in all I am dissapointed with the optical performance. |
