Red dot = black dot

I've worked my way through a stack of dot sights, and that's pretty much where they are --- in a "pile" in my closet. I haven't subjected them to anything unreasonable. No mud. No combat. No sand. No major calibers. All I asked for was repeatable zero, manual (no-tool) adjustment, and crispness.

Got it. My Nikon has been on a Ruger MK III for a couple of years, now. Every once in awhile I switch barrels --- once the sight is mounted using a quarter and bench-rested, the dot stays where the hole goes.

I generally shoot at 50 feet. With this sight, bench-rested, and a box of Lapua Midas you can essentially make a dime-sized hole. I have a suspicion it would do the same thing at 50 yards. Obviously, the hole changes (a teensy bit) off-hand, but at least I know --- know --- that anything outside the 10 is my fault.

The sight appears a little bulky, at first, but it's actually extremely light. Turret caps come off to reveal marked, zero-able, coined target knobs that click snugly. Mine goes back to zero if I switch distances. Nice brightness range, and the dot adjusts from a needle-prick up to a baseball.

This sight will probably improve your score, but not your shooting. For that you'll have to take the Monarch off every now and then and go back to open sights. Then ... you put it back on.

Why four stars? Almost nothing is a five.
Great value for your $$$.

I purchased this unit from a local gun store, after trying for days to find a thorough review online. I found only one mediocre one, so I thought I'd post my initial thoughts on the unit.

- Nikon doesn't generally sell junk, and this piece appears to be no exception. I have several other types of optics, including two from Bushnell (one of Eotech design), NCstar and Target Scopes. The finish and build quality of this sight is several steps up from any of the others, with the exception of the Bushnell Combat Holo, which is on par with the Nikon.
- This unit is light and easy to operate.
- The red dot is as clear as any Aimpoint I've shot through. It does not have the battery life of the Aimpoint, nor the battle testing, but it's half the price and I'm not taking it to Iraq. The variable dot size is a nice feature and I've gone as far as to take it out on a clear, sunny day and the dot remains visible on the highest setting.
- Lenses are clear and easy to see through. The size of the unit allows the shooter to maintain good peripheral vision.
- You can co-witness through your irons with a 1/2" riser (I used Yankee Hill's 4" piece and it works great), or you can co-witness your irons in the bottom third of the optic with a 3/4" riser.
- Many of these less expensive sights feel dinky and cheap, this one does not. It is imported, but even the battery compartment is well done. If you snug it down with a quarter, it will not release when operating the brightness selector.

I have not had a chance to take this sight to the range, but when I do I'll update this review and let everyone know if it maintains zero. Thus far, I'm very impressed with the quality. This is the first red dot, under $500, I've seen with a clear, perfectly round and centered dot that maintains it's sharpness in the bright, west Texas Desert with the sun up. The only reason I haven't given it a five star rating is I don't know if it will maintain zero under firing. I'll know soon enough and I'm going to shoot it on a 6.8 and 5.56.

Stay frosty.

Product Description

Originally introduced in 2004, the Team Realtree Laser800 range finder launched Nikon's advanced Tru-Target ranging system, which lets users prioritize smaller and harder-to-range lone targets at the push of a button. As a result, it's easier than ever to accurately locate distant targets from up to 800 yards away, making this a must-have tool for hunters everywhere. The palm-sized Laser800 relies on Nikon's digital measurement processor for its precision, ensuring speedy 1/2-yard accuracy to within 400 yards and consistent 1-yard readings out to 800 yards. On the other end of the spectrum, the unit can range as close as 11 yards, so you aren't restricted to long-distance targets only. Add in such features as six-power multicoated optics, an eyeglass-friendly 18mm of eye relief (with focusing diopter), and a backlit LCD display and you have a comfortable, powerful range finder that leaves its competitors in the dust.

The Laser800 is also fully waterproof and fogproof, so you needn't leave it behind on soggy mornings. Other details include a reticle backlighting option that lights the display in dim conditions, a unique reticle that notifies the user when ranging is in progress, a Realtree Hardwoods housing in a camo color, and a 3-volt lithium battery. The lightweight Laser800 weighs only 7.4 ounces and is tripod adaptable.

Great rangefinder for hunting and golf although I primarily use it on the golf course, even though I have a UPro which I also like. You can scope the flag and get the distance to the pin, or if you are having trouble keeping the crosshairs steady, pan the flag and watch for the yardage change, the lowest will be the distance to the flag. Easy and quick to use, I like the x6 magnification. The Nikons size is comfortable to stow in your bag or cart and fits in your hand comfortably. I wear sunglasses and can read the yardages easily without having to remove them. I recommend this rangefinder and am very happy I purchased it.

Product Description

Nikon's African Riflescope Series. Africa has long been a continent of dreams and danger for hunters around the world. For those seeking their adventure on the Dark Continent, Nikon has a riflescope series that is more than ready for the hunt. Three riflescopes - all with ultra wide fields of view - make up the new Monarch African Series from–a one-inch tube 1-4x20mm and two 30mm tube 1.1-4x24mm models. Each scope features Nikon's fully multicoated optics to provide crystal clear viewing and a power range designed to handle fast shots with dangerous game. "In a dangerous game situation the hunt can turn from lazy to deadly in less than a second," said Jon LaCorte, Senior Product Marketing Manager for Nikon Sport Optics. "And that's when you will really appreciate every feature we built into our African Series of riflescopes."Hard charging game requires hard hitting rifles and Nikon's four full inches of eye relief will keep all the pain on the barrel end. The lower power range keeps shooters on target in fast, "both eyes open" situations. The easy, light to handle 20mm and 24mm objectives combine with Nikon's durability to carry the rifle without worry. All of the African Series scopes are built around what works when hunting dangerous game in Africa and beyond and utilize the proven German #4 reticle for fast target/reticle acquisition. For late night predators of the toothy kind and other low-light hunting, an illuminated #4 is available as well. And since it's a Monarch, crystal clear images and light transmission second to none will help make the Dark Continent seem a little brighter. The 1/2 MOA adjustment means a fast, sure sight-in. A large field of view gets you on target fast, when it literally can mean life or death for the hunter or the hunted.

Product Description

Whether you're shooting varmints, hunting in the first or last light of day, or simply want big power, the Monarch 6-24x50SF riflescope is an ideal choice. The riflescope offers such features as a one-piece, 1-inch main body tube; a creative Eyebox design with a huge ocular that provides a 4x magnification range and 4 inches of constant eye relief without sacrificing the field of view; an ultra ClearCoat system for 95 percent light transmission; and fully multicoated, super-high-performance lenses. After the lenses are cut and polished, Nikon coats them with multiple layers of anti-reflective compounds. The compounds serve to boost light transmission, improve contrast (to pull game out of its surroundings), deliver true color rendition and flare-free viewing, and enhance the overall image quality. The scope's Nikoplex reticle, meanwhile, is a favorite of American sportsmen, with thicker posts on the top, bottom, and sides and thinner center crosshairs for precision aiming under all light conditions.

In addition, the riflescope is prepared for years of reliable service thanks to its 100-percent waterproof, fogproof, and shockproof housing. The scope is O-ring sealed, oxygen purged, and nitrogen filled to prevent fogging, while the waterproof performance is guaranteed, even with the windage and elevation caps off. Other details include a quick focus eyepiece; a locking side-focus parallax adjustment; interchangeable turret technology with target-style windage and elevation adjustment knobs and caps; enhanced ring spacing that allows you to mount the scope on virtually any rifle; and a unique zoom control with rearward facing numbers. The riflescope carries Nikon's full lifetime warranty.
